A bit about Timofey and our family

My name is Grigory, and I am the father of Timofey, a resilient 16-year-old from Ukraine who has faced extraordinary challenges following a severe brainstem stroke. I am sharing his story to highlight his courage and the ongoing journey we navigate together with my wife, Yulia.

Diagnosis and timeline

On May 9, 2024, Timofey suffered an ischemic stroke in the brainstem, which then caused a hemorrhagic symptom in the pontine region. This life-altering event has brought numerous challenges, but also moments of profound hope and progress. Timofey has also been diagnosed in childhood with a rare genetic disease called phacomatosis, which has complicated his medical journey.

Due to the lack of qualified specialists at the children's clinic, the ischemic stroke was not recognized immediately. As a result, thromboextraction was performed 22 hours after the stroke occurred, adding a significant delay to his treatment.

Most bothersome symptoms

Timofey experienced many symptoms throughout his injury, with the most burdensome symptoms being motor impairments, swallowing difficulties and communication challenges.

Initially, Timofey experienced severe paralysis, unable to move his limbs or speak. Over time, he has regained some movement in his fingers and shoulders and can now turn his head.

Timofey also struggled with swallowing, necessitating a feeding tube and later a gastrostomy to ensure he receives adequate nutrition.

While he cannot speak due to a tracheostomy, he has developed ways to communicate non-verbally, using head movements and blinking.

Rehabilitation and healthcare team

Currently, Timofey has not yet accessed formal rehabilitation services. His care and support come solely from my wife, Yulia, and me. We are in urgent need of quality rehabilitation to aid his recovery.

Highs and lows throughout this journey

Before his stroke, Timofey was an avid sports enthusiast, practicing boxing. Despite his current limitations, we try to keep his spirit high by discussing sports events and watching matches together, which he deeply enjoys.

The most significant success has been witnessing Timofey’s small but meaningful improvements. His ability to move his head and fingers, express emotions and interact non-verbally are milestones we celebrate with immense gratitude.

One of the hardest aspects has been managing the emotional and physical toll of his condition, compounded by the ongoing need for intensive care and rehabilitation. Access to advanced rehabilitation facilities remains a challenge, and we continuously seek opportunities for better care, especially given the current situation in Ukraine.

Advice for other survivors and caregivers:

Stay hopeful and celebrate every small victory. Rehabilitation is a long and often slow process, but persistence and a positive mindset can lead to meaningful improvements. Surround yourself with a supportive network, and don’t hesitate to seek help when needed.
